What residential jobs need in Cherry Hill
Solar
- Solar energy systems need a zoning permit from Community Development before the construction permit. Zoning is a prior approval.
For any trade not listed here, we confirm the requirements with the department during jurisdiction research, before we file.
Where filings stall
- The construction application cannot move until the zoning permit is approved, and both are filed on paper.
New Jersey rules that apply
- Permits are issued under the Uniform Construction Code (UCC), with separate building, electrical, plumbing and fire subcodes, using the state's standard forms (F100 application, F110 building, F120 electrical, F130 plumbing, F140 fire).
- Zoning, engineering or health sign-offs are 'prior approvals' and must be in hand before the construction office starts plan review.
- Home Improvement Contractors register with the Division of Consumer Affairs. Licensed electrical, plumbing and HVACR contractors working within their license are exempt. HVACR work generally needs a Master HVACR license holder.
- A law signed in December 2025 directs the state to build an automated online permitting platform for residential rooftop solar and batteries.
