Permits in Edison, NJ
We file solar, heat pump and generator permits with Edison's Code & Construction Division, through zoning review and each subcode official.
Who issues permits
- Office
- Township of Edison Code & Construction Division, Department of Planning and Engineering
- How filings are submitted
- In person · Forms are available at the office or from the NJ DCA, three copies of each subcode form.
What residential jobs need in Edison
Heat pumps and HVAC
- Edison requires a permit for replacing a furnace or water heater, so equipment change-outs are permitted work.
For any trade not listed here, we confirm the requirements with the department during jurisdiction research, before we file.
Where filings stall
- The Zoning Officer reviews first, then the building, electrical, plumbing and fire subcode officials each review their part.
- Each subcode form is submitted in three copies.
New Jersey rules that apply
- Permits are issued under the Uniform Construction Code (UCC), with separate building, electrical, plumbing and fire subcodes, using the state's standard forms (F100 application, F110 building, F120 electrical, F130 plumbing, F140 fire).
- Zoning, engineering or health sign-offs are 'prior approvals' and must be in hand before the construction office starts plan review.
- Home Improvement Contractors register with the Division of Consumer Affairs. Licensed electrical, plumbing and HVACR contractors working within their license are exempt. HVACR work generally needs a Master HVACR license holder.
- A law signed in December 2025 directs the state to build an automated online permitting platform for residential rooftop solar and batteries.
