Permits in Brookhaven, NY
We file residential solar and battery permits with the Town of Brookhaven Building Division on its new online system, and coordinate the third-party electrical inspection.
Who issues permits
- Office
- Town of Brookhaven Building Division
- How filings are submitted
- Town of Brookhaven Digital Services · Since September 28, 2026, expeditors and licensed professionals must file residential applications online.
- Inspections
- The town does not inspect electrical work itself. An approved inspection agency does, and the wiring cannot be energized until that agency issues its certificate. The town publishes its list of approved agencies.
What residential jobs need in Brookhaven
Solar
- Solar panels are a residential permit type with the Building Division.
- The owner signs a notarized Solar Affidavit before the permit is issued. It confirms every structure on the property has a valid Certificate of Occupancy (or equivalent), and that any pool has a Certificate of Compliance.
For any trade not listed here, we confirm the requirements with the department during jurisdiction research, before we file.
Where filings stall
- An open Certificate of Occupancy issue anywhere on the property (a shed, a deck, a pool) holds up a solar permit through the affidavit.
- Applications from expeditors and licensed professionals filed on paper after September 28, 2026 are not accepted.
New York rules that apply
- Licensing is set by counties and cities rather than the state. Suffolk County's Office of Consumer Affairs licenses home improvement contractors and master electricians; Westchester County licenses home improvement contractors, electricians and master plumbers.
- Outside Nassau and Suffolk, many jurisdictions use the New York State Unified Solar Permit for small residential systems. Long Island towns use their own fast-track solar forms.
- On Long Island, towns generally do not inspect electrical work themselves. An approved third-party inspection agency does, and its certificate is part of closing out the permit.
