Permits in Huntington, NY

We file residential solar permits with the Town of Huntington through its Fast Track Solar process, and coordinate the electrical inspection agency for the Certificate of Occupancy.

Who issues permits

Office
Town of Huntington Building & Housing Division, Department of Engineering Services
Inspections
The town does not perform electrical inspections. A certificate of approval from an authorized inspection agency is required, and it is part of getting the Certificate of Occupancy.

What residential jobs need in Huntington

Solar

  • Residential solar goes through the town's Fast Track Solar process.
  • The package includes the town's solar forms, plan sets, a workers' comp certificate, a Suffolk County Home Improvement License with photo ID, and a recent tax bill.
  • Expect a design professional's roof-load letter and a PE letter certifying the system for the town's wind requirement.
  • 'Standard' installs (flush-mounted, one roofing layer, ridge clearances met, installed by a NY-Sun participating installer) get a faster decision than non-standard ones.

For any trade not listed here, we confirm the requirements with the department during jurisdiction research, before we file.

Where filings stall

  • Every solar permit carries a Certificate of Occupancy, so the job is not closed until the C of O is issued.
  • Workers' comp proof has to name the Town of Huntington as certificate holder.

New York rules that apply

  • Licensing is set by counties and cities rather than the state. Suffolk County's Office of Consumer Affairs licenses home improvement contractors and master electricians; Westchester County licenses home improvement contractors, electricians and master plumbers.
  • Outside Nassau and Suffolk, many jurisdictions use the New York State Unified Solar Permit for small residential systems. Long Island towns use their own fast-track solar forms.
  • On Long Island, towns generally do not inspect electrical work themselves. An approved third-party inspection agency does, and its certificate is part of closing out the permit.
