Battery storage permits, with or without solar.

A home battery looks like a box on a wall and gets reviewed like a fire and electrical question. We build the package so the reviewer has the listing, the location and the panel math on the first pass.

What jurisdictions usually ask for

  • Equipment listed to UL 9540, with spec sheets that show the listing and the kWh rating.
  • A site plan and floor plan showing where the battery goes and where the smoke, CO and heat alarms are.
  • A location the residential code allows: garages, exterior walls at least 3 feet from doors and windows into the home, or finished utility spaces. Never in or opening into a bedroom.
  • Per-unit and total kWh within the limits of the code edition the jurisdiction adopted.
  • A single-line diagram showing how the battery connects to the main panel and any existing solar, and how the busbar rating is met.

Requirements vary by city and county, so we confirm them for each job during jurisdiction research, before we file.

Where these permits stall

  • A location that fails the clearance or wall-finish rules, found after the job is sold.
  • Total capacity over the local limit because the jurisdiction adopted a different code edition.
  • Busbar math that does not work once the existing solar breaker is counted.
  • Missing heat detection in a garage or no impact protection where a car can reach the unit.

What we do on these jobs

  • Confirm the adopted code edition and local amendments before the package is built.
  • Flag panel capacity questions from the panel photo, before the reviewer asks.
  • File through SolarAPP+ Storage Only where the jurisdiction has switched it on.
  • Answer every plan-check comment at no extra charge.
